Barassi - Devonport
Ron Barassi’s champion footballer father wore number 31 in the 1940 Grand Final before being killed as a soldier in Tobruk. He left a small boy who dreamed of one day being just like his father. This Legacy boy, with a fervent desire, was taken in by legendary Melbourne Football coach, Norm Smith, to become one of the league’s finest players. Suburban coaches from around Australia would yell at their charges to “Get some 31 in ya!” He shocked the football world when he left his father’s club to captain coach its rival Carlton. But then, in life’s third quarter, football’s most determined player became the game’s most ferocious, unstoppable, Super Coach. Barassi is a story of a local hero, a fatherless boy shaped into a champion by a loving, but no-nonsense, mother and a formidable foster father. The Stage Show explores how the fatherless boy became the legend and along the way shaped the mighty game itself – Australian Rules Football – our indigenous game that demands courage, skill, determination, innovation, selflessness – and that bit of 31 in you.
