Virtuosi Tasmania Schubert Octet concert - Devonport
Virtuosi Tasmania - Schubert Octet concert.
Franz Schubert (1797-1828) Octet in F major, D 803 for clarinet, horn, bassoon, 2 violins, viola, cello and double bass.
The work comes late in its composer's short but highly prolific life. The 6 movement structure suggests the world of the serenade or divertimento, with features that look back to Haydn, Mozart and early Beethoven. It was, in fact, modelled on Beethoven's hugely successful Septet of 1800, with the addition of a second violin. Schubert's work is longer than most such pieces, not so much due to its form, but because of his love of long and expansive melodic lines.
Chris Waller (clarinet), John Panckridge (bassoon), Roger Jackson (french horn), Chris Nicholas and Victoria Bihun (violins), Anna Roach (viola), Jane Tallon (cello) and Stephen Martin (double bass).
