Tasmanian seafood trails

For seafood lovers, an island is a great place to be. 

Set your fish-finder to Tasmania’s Seafood Trails for salty breezes and the day’s catch straight from the ocean: just-shucked oysters, southern rock lobster (known universally in Tasmania as crayfish), wild-caught abalone and fish.

Tasmania’s seafood treats range from a lobster shack in Bicheno on the east coast, to oyster feasts around the island in view of the oyster leases, and a seafood spread on Hobart’s waterfront. 

Find a new favourite fish and chip shop, or go DIY in your holiday beach shack. 

Canny shoppers can snap up the freshest catch at markets across the state. In Hobart, head to the fish punts moored in Constitution Dock or Farm Gate Market in the CBD on Sundays. In places such as Freycinet Peninsula, Stanley and Dunalley, it’s easy to head to the source and buy direct.  

Seafood finds aren’t limited to the coastal fringe. Discover an inland salmon farm near Deloraine, sea-urchin dumplings in Launceston, or put Tasmania’s famed scallop pies to the taste test; they’re found in bakeries across the island.

Not wanting to boast, but Tasmania’s oysters have cult followings. Head to an oyster farm – found in the likes of Coles Bay, Dolphin Sands, Smithton, Bruny Island and Cambridge – to give shucking a crack, or watch the experts who make it look easy.
