Launceston Distillery produces hand-crafted single malt whisky and is located at Launceston Airport’s historic Hangar 17. Built in 1932, Hangar 17 is the oldest aviation building in Tasmania. In the 1950s it was home to Ansett-ANA, when there was an adventure associated with flying and nostalgia around a fine glass of whisky. Today the Hangar provides the perfect home for a boutique whisky distillery. From grain to bottle everything happens under the one roof. The major equipment is Tasmanian-made. The brewing equipment was inspired by the old Boags brewhouse. The beautiful copper pot stills with their distinctive reflux ball design, produce a smooth, refined spirit. The whisky is produced in small batches using traditional techniques, Tasmanian malted barley and pure South Esk river water. This makes for an elegant style of whisky that is gentle, fruity, floral and enjoyable to drink. Our whiskies are matured on site in a variety of oak casks. The standard range of products are bottled at 46% ABV. Limited editions are also available at natural cask strength. Visitors most welcome for tours, tastings and bottle sales.
