Cataraqui Memorial, King Island
The Cataraqui Memorial is a significant and reflective site commemorating the tragic wreck of the Cataraqui in 1845, Australia's worst civilian maritime disaster. More than 400 passengers and crew lost their lives when the emigrant ship struck reefs off King Island's southwest coast during a violent storm. Overlooking the remote coastline and nearby gravesites, the memorial features a commemorative bell and plaques honouring those who perished. The quiet and isolated setting adds to the solemn atmosphere, offering visitors a place for reflection while taking in the rugged beauty of the surrounding coastline. Access is via an unsealed gravel road, and a vehicle with higher clearance is recommended.
