Leeaberra Glamping

Just 100 metres downstream from Heritage Falls is Leeaberra Falls, it's smaller but no less pretty twin. Leeaberra Falls tumbles about 8 metres down an unusual twisting drop, into a deep green pool. The easiest way to see the falls is by hiking downstream from the base of Heritage Falls (see that page for information on the hike to that point) where from a little outcrop it is possible to get a decent side-on view of Leeaberra Falls from the top. If you are very keen though, it is possible, albeit difficult to get to the base of the falls. Scrub bash up a ridge on the right bank of the Douglas River, heading over the top and descending steeply on the other side. Similar to the descent to Heritage Falls, the rocky slopes are extremely unstable, however, the difference here is that there is no track, meaning overgrowth also obscures the route down. Having said that, the descent doesn't last too long before dropping you out at the river just downstream of the falls. It is possible to visit Heritage and Leeaberra Falls in a day provided you have a 4WD capable of taking you to the start of the track, however, it is recommended to do the hike as an overnighter, or by continuing on the rest of the 3-day Leeaberra Track.

This is a Grade 5 Hike and suitable for experienced walkers only, with a rough, unformed track. It is considered a 2-day hike in the Douglas Apsley National Park. Please check with Parks Tasmania regarding the state of the tracks before attempting this walk and let someone know before you go.

Douglas-Apsley Loop Track is a walk in Douglas-Apsley National Park. 10-15 minutes return, 1.2km return. Grade 1. The Loop Track is a short, easy walk which leads to the sparkling waters of Apsley Waterhole. This gentle stroll follows a trail through eucalypts and wattle trees, and is suitable for walkers of all ability, including young children. An information booth shows details of other tracks in the area, and signage along the way helps with tree identification. Just 600 metres from the car park, the waterhole is especially popular in summer with both locals and visitors. You can choose to return the same way, or, for a slightly more challenging walk, you can descend a steep side track to the waterhole via the nearby campground. If you do this, remember to bring your bathers and enjoy a swim or a paddle: the water is usually calm and clear, and it's a lovely way to refresh yourself on a summer's day. There are plenty of large boulders where you can sit and dry off, before exploring the rock formations and enjoying a picnic lunch in one of the pretty spots nearby.
