Tiers Rest

This 1886 general store is now a restaurant with a liquor license and runs community and social events within the store. It is a place to step back in time and appreciate the good old days. Good old-fashioned service, nostalgia, antiques and upmarket retro clothing feature in the store. We are currently closed Mondays and Thursdays, but open every other day10.30 am to 5 pm except Saturdays when we open at noon till 5 pm. We are also open some evenings for special events. One of Tasmania's premium attractions Trowunna Wildlife Sanctuary located at Mole Creek, Trowunna is recognised as a world leader in Wildlife conservation. There are three free daily tours as part of your admission price. On tour, you can interact with a Devil and a Wombat and view a Tasmanian devil social feeding. Trowunna Wildlife Sanctuary is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm. Daily interactive tours are conducted at 11 am, 1 pm and 3 pm. Learn all about Trowunna's breeding programs including our work in helping save the Tasmanian Devil. Car and coach parking is available on site Group bookings and private tours are welcome and Devil and/or Wombat full-day workshops are available. Trowunna Wildlife sanctuary is set in 82 acres of native bushland at Mole Creek and is a must-see experience. The Sanctuary is within easy reach of both the world-famous Cradle Mountain and Mole Creek caves and is an essential inclusion as part of a fantastic day trip.

Alum Cliffs trail follows a short, well-defined track through an area of historical and cultural significance. From the car park there is a short ascent to a plateau with a large sculpture (the three points on the sculpture represent the three significant paths aboriginal people would walk; from Western Bluff to Tulampanga and Quamby Bluff). Then through a gentle descent the track terminates at a viewing platform overlooking the Mersey River and spectacular Alum Cliffs Gorge. Tulampanga is the Pallittorre (local Aboriginal) name for the area. Time: 40 minutes return. Grade: 2: Suitable for most ages.
