The Pavilions at Mona

French-Swiss artist Julian Charrière is marking a descent into deep time at Mona. Come and sample sculpture, film, photography and installation from the full breadth of Charrière's elemental output—where stone grinds, iceberg groans, mountain heaves—bridging nature, science, history, industry, myth and morality. Moorilla is one of Tasmania's oldest wineries. Nestled on a small peninsula on the River Derwent, it was founded in 1956 by textile magnate Claudio Alcorso, before being bought by David Walsh in 1995, and the site is now home to the Museum of Old and New Art (Mona) as well as the winery. As part of the development of Mona, the winery was completely rebuilt and is now housed just above the museum entrance (fruit for the winery is drawn from Moorilla as well as a northern vineyard in the Tamar Valley). The site also holds Moorilla's Cellar Door and the Moorilla Wine Bar. As well as tastings, they offer a range of premium tours and experiences through the Ultimate Winery Experiences Australia program. Moorilla produces red, white, and sparkling wines using estate-grown cool-climate grape varieties across three styles: the quaffable Praxis; elegant Muse, and high-end Cloth Label.

Looking at art used to be boring. It still is, maybe, but at least at Mona, the Museum of Old and New Art, you can get drunk and/or rage against the machine. Located just up the river from Hobart (Tasmania's southern capital), Mona's subterranean architecture showcases the highlights (and lowlights) of David Walsh's $110m private collection of art and antiquities, as well as hosting a busy exhibitions program. Mona is also home to the Moorilla winery, two restaurants, several bars, accommodation pavilions and more (plus Moo Brew, an off-site brewery). Each June, Mona's Dark Mofo winter festival delves into centuries-old winter solstice rituals and celebrates the dark through art, music, food, film, light and noise.
