The Australian Voices with St Matthew's Singers: Following the release of their latest CD, renowned national choir The Australian Voices is visiting regional Tasmania with their "Painted in Dirt" Tasmanian tour. Championing compositions by Australian musicians, including those of Artistic Director John Rotar, they will give you a taste of contemporary Australian choral music – including choir and audience favourite "Painted in Dirt", featuring a myriad of bush noises! The Australian Voices will be joined for this concert by New Norfolk choir St Matthew's Singers, conducted by Susan Reppion-Brooke. St Matthew's Anglican Church are celebrating its 200th Anniversary in 2025, and we are excited to share this concert as part of their anniversary celebrations. A learning day with Mark O'Leary OAM, Annie Kwok, and Joshua Clifford Calling all choir leaders! Join us for an exciting professional development opportunity as you work with three outstanding Australian conductors and music educators – Mark O'Leary OAM (VIC), Annie Kwok (SA) and Joshua Clifford (QLD). This interactive and informative day will include sessions with a range of topics relevant to conductors and leaders of any experience level and choirs of all ages. Please wear comfortable clothing and be prepared to sing! Mark your calendars and don't miss this opportunity to expand your skills at this event supported by the Australian National Choral Association. Mongolian tradition meets modern world music in an Australian debut Experience the breathtaking sounds of HAYA Band as they make their Australian debut at Festival of Voices this July. This session will dive into the world of vocal health with voice expert Joshua Clifford and offer practical tips and resources for voices of all types and ages – perfect for singers & conductors! From steaming and straw singing to caring for our voices as they age, these insights and tools are informed by research and are invaluable for conductors and singers alike! Our popular Song Trivia night is back, hosted by the ever-energetic Vicky Jacobs from Glee Club! This year, she's joined by local Cygnet musician Rose Wilson and a specially formed choir of local singers. This isn't just music trivia – expect questions on history, culture, travel, science, and more. Whether you're a pop culture whiz, trivia buff, or just love a fun night out with friends, there's something for everyone. What makes this night extra special? The choir! They'll sing some of the questions, answers, and playful moments in between, turning trivia into a full-on musical experience. And yes, there'll be plenty of chances to sing along – you might even leave humming a new favourite tune! It's an all-ages event, perfect for bringing friends, family, or meeting new teammates. Come as a group of up to 8, or solo – either way, you're in for a great night. Snacks and drinks will be available for purchase, so grab a treat and settle in. A vocal journey from solo voice to massed choir. Join long-time Festival friend Mark O'Leary OAM as he guides you on a musical journey not only through the 20 years of Festival of Voices, but also the power of vocal music as it grows from the single voice of Jenny M. Thomas to the visual and aural impact of many combined voices. This opening gala concert of the 20th Festival of Voices brings performers from previous Festivals together with new participants, intertwined with anecdotes and memory highlights. We're excited to welcome back Festival favourites Allison Farrow and Andrew Short, Cocktail Hour Quartet, Harambee A Cappella, The Australian Voices and Paul Jarman to share this journey with you. Audiences will also be treated to performances by the FoV Chamber Choir, conducted by the USA's Christopher Kiver, and the combined forces of several Hobart community choirs, accompanied by outstanding instrumentalists from Hobart Wind Symphony and the Hillcrest Christian College John Williams Wind Orchestra.

Delve into the wonderful world of songwriting with your mentor, nationally respected composer and musical storyteller Paul Jarman. In this intimate and creative workshop, you will be encouraged to create and share stories and songs with new friends. This workshop will include an open dialogue about how we write songs. Those who have not attended this workshop in previous years are encouraged to join Paul for an optional introductory session, where he will begin to look at the elements in the songwriters' toolbox, including the nuts and bolts of composing, melodic nuances, finding inspiration and mindset, and integrity in storytelling. In a collaborative and supportive environment, Paul and participants will work individually and together to craft music, drawing from personal experiences and stories. Whether or not you read music or have much experience, if you're interested in learning more about writing your own songs, you're encouraged to attend. Previous attendees have described the experience as uniquely special for what they've taken away from the two days and friends they made along the way. Participants are also welcome to bring along instruments to this workshop. The workshop schedule also includes a preliminary meet-and-greet session in the Singers' Lounge with Paul and your fellow songwriters. Workshop numbers are strictly capped at 18 participants, so be sure to register early to avoid disappointment!

In 2024, we saw seasoned acts like The Velvetones and Mama Alto share the stage with first-time performers who bravely declared "This is the first time I've ever sung in public." The line between artist and audience blurs, creating a sense of community and celebration that feels distinctly Tasmanian. A heart waring and funny show about friendship for young children. Created by acclaimed Tasmanian writer and performer Bindy Stephens, Teddies & Bin, Rhyme & Sing is a joyful, interactive theatre experience designed especially for children aged 0 to 7 years. Featuring storytelling, music, and movement, this heartwarming production encourages kids to explore friendship, kindness, and problem-solving through play and song. Join DJ Dog Bruce and a lively cast of characters as they navigate the ups and downs of friendship, learning the importance of sharing, listening, and working together. With catchy tunes, playful rhymes, and plenty of opportunities to join in, this show will have children (and their grown-ups!) clapping, singing, and laughing along. Work with USA's Christopher Kiver in an intimate, curated workshop! Festival of Voices is delighted to welcome Christopher Kiver (USA) to lead our second ever Chamber Choir Workshop! Designed for the capable, experienced singer, participants will explore ensemble singing in a blended and balanced niche choir. Chris will mould a wonderfully cohesive ensemble and present a professional level Chamber Choir at The Power of Harmony; our special Festival opening concert, celebrating our 20th anniversary. Workshop participants will be selected by audition only. Singers are invited to submit an application form and audition video without delay as places in each voice part are limited to ensure ensemble balance. The Chamber Choir repertoire has been carefully chosen by Chris and will include a broad range of musical genres, styles and eras. This workshop is proudly presented in collaboration with the Australian National Choral Association.

Bold folk songs of convict resistance and survival. Bush Gothic isn't your typical folk band. This striking trio, led by singer and composer Jenny M. Thomas, takes traditional songs and flips them on their head—offering something fierce, intelligent, and unexpected. Their sound is raw and immediate, their storytelling razor-sharp. It's no surprise they've earned accolades, including the 2022 Australian Folk Music Award for Best Band and multiple Best Music awards at Adelaide Fringe. For Songs of Resistance, Bush Gothic turns its focus to the convict women and children who endured, resisted, and survived one of the harshest colonial systems. Created especially for the Cascade Female Factory, this powerful concert draws on Jenny M. Thomas' deep connection to the site to shape an intimate, place-based performance. The songs, drawn from folk tradition, are anything but dusty museum pieces. They tell stories of resilience: a clever woman transported for theft (Black Velvet Band), a servant punished for a crime she may not have committed (A Convict Maid), a sly grog shop runner (Polly). These tales of heartbreak and survival echo hauntingly in the very place many lived. The concert also weaves in iconic Australian songs—from Great Southern Land to Waltzing Matilda—placing convict voices within our broader national story. Songs of Resistance fills this historic space with music full of life, strength, and voice.

In 2015, Vince Jones and Paul Grabowsky—two of Australia's most revered musicians—joined forces to create Provenance, a stunning album of jazz-infused ballads that earned the 2016 ARIA Award for Best Jazz Album. A decade later, they reunite for a special anniversary concert at Festival of Voices 2025. Vince Jones, known for his soulful voice and expressive trumpet playing, brings a heartfelt authenticity to every note. Paul Grabowsky, a virtuosic pianist and composer with seven ARIA Awards, is one of Australia's most influential jazz musicians. Together, they form a musical partnership defined by artistry, mutual respect, and effortless synergy. A native Londoner, Katie will lead you through the rollicking classics of the London Music Halls—think Down the Strand, The Lambeth Walk, and I've Got a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts—from behind the ol' Joanna (that's Cockney for piano!). Whether you know the tunes or are hearing them for the first time, Katie's infectious energy will have you singing along in no time. She'll be joined by her choir Glee West, whose welcoming spirit and joyful harmonies will keep the atmosphere light, inclusive, and full of fun. Workshop and performance with the fabulous Velvetones! Have you ever wondered what it might be like to sing in four-part harmony and be a part of a fun and vibrant a cappella group? Wonder no longer! Come and join the versatile and vivacious members of The Velvetones for an entertaining and inclusive workshop you won't forget! You'll come together as one big Velvetone family as Claire, Steph, Leonie and Stephanie take you on a ride of learning songs from scratch through to performance, with a focus on musical development, enjoyment, presentation, tools for performance and of course, some of the famous Velvetones sass! The day will be a true Velvetones experience – right down to enjoying tea and chocolate with the group at break time. There are no barriers to joining in – everyone will take something away from this workshop, regardless of your musical background. Those who are up for a challenge will have their needs met, alongside those who have limited or no group singing experience. All voice types are most welcome! As part of Festival of Voices' 20th-anniversary celebrations, this all-weather, family-friendly event takes place in the iconic Willie Smith's Apple Shed—an original 1942 packing shed turned rustic venue in the heart of the Huon Valley. Featuring: Wolfefolk – Led by violinist/vocalist Emily Wolfe, this energetic act blends Celtic folk, bluegrass, and original tunes for a toe-tapping set. Tuck Shop Ladies – Sam Lohs and Rosie Burgess bring cheeky humour, ukuleles, and tight harmonies in a set full of laughter and sass. Wheelie Bin Orchestra – This inventive trio turns everyday bins into brilliant percussion instruments in a rhythm-filled performance. Bob Brown's life told through his poems, set to music. On the 42nd anniversary of the moment that changed the course of Tasmania's environmental history – the stopping of the Franklin Dam – Festival of Voices is honoured to present But Then…, a moving and deeply personal musical event from one of the country's most revered conservationists. Bob Brown needs no introduction. His voice has echoed through decades of activism, courage and change. But what many don't know is that Bob is also a poet – his words are often described as tender, lyrical, and steeped in the quiet power of reflection. But Then… brings those poems to life. When musician and producer Steve Crump first heard Bob's poetry, he was struck by the emotional honesty within them and asked whether he could put it to music – Bob agreed and so began a remarkable collaboration. This premiere performance features Bob Brown reading his poems and sharing stories from across a lifetime, interwoven with music composed and performed by Steve Crump (piano), the extraordinary Monique Brumby (vocals and guitar), and Kate Calwell (cello). Together, they trace an autobiographical journey through music, memory, and meaning. Join us for an intimate evening of song, storytelling and reflection—one that offers a rare glimpse into the heart and history of an Australian icon.

Join accomplished Tasmanian composer Maria Grenfell as she chats with prominent Australian composers of choral music Annie Kwok (SA), John Rotar (QLD) and Don Kay (TAS) with librettist John Honey (TAS) in an informal and informative setting. Our featured composers will share the inspirations behind their commissions, thoughts around composing for specific ensembles and the importance of connecting with lyricists and other composers. Following the panel discussion, participants will have the opportunity for Q&A and networking with our featured composers.

Celebrating stories, language, music, and connection to Country This powerful performance unites the voices and cultures of two First Nations communities—Gimuy/Cairns and Lutruwita/Tasmania—to celebrate story, language, music, and place. The Gondwana Indigenous Children's Choir, based in Gimuy/Cairns, is one of Australia's most celebrated youth ensembles. Under the direction of Lyn Williams AM, the choir is known for its vibrant sound and commitment to new choral works in First Nations languages, developed alongside cultural custodians. During this performance, live songs will be paired with evocative films shot on Country, deepening the connection between music, stories, and place. "The aim is to show the relationship between stories, language, music, and Country, celebrating this proud First Nation culture. " — Lyn Williams AM For many of these young performers, it will be their first visit to Tasmania—making this moment even more meaningful. A few are also members of Marliya, the choir's acclaimed 'big sister' ensemble, who wowed audiences at Festival of Voices 2024 with Spinifex Gum. The concert also features Lutruwita's own Madam pakana – DENNI. A proud truwulway woman and multidisciplinary artist, DENNI is known for her bold sound and powerful storytelling. She'll share original songs and collaborate with the choir on stage. Songs of Country is more than a concert—it's a celebration of culture, resilience, and deep connection to Country.

An informal and inclusive social singing workshop. Join us for a fun, informal and inclusive session with amazing Tasmanian choir director Jane Christie-Johnston. Within minutes, you will become part of an a cappella choir in four-part harmony as you sing a mix of gospel, folk and more. This session is for people wanting to 'have a crack' at a cappella singing in a choir for the first time, or try a new style of singing … or you might just want a fantastic and relaxing social singing experience with no strings attached. Everything is taught by ear (no music reading or choir singing experience needed) and beginners are welcome. If you have attended Jane's workshops at the festival in previous years, you will know that this is a fulfilling and relaxing way to join like-minded folk and enjoy singing just for the pure joy of it! Maloya is more than a music and dance genre – it's an expression of Réunionese Creole culture. Communicating aspects of the island's history of slavery and resistance, Maloya embodies resilience, storytelling and community. It's a tradition that pulses through the Indian Ocean's Creole cultures, carried in rhythm, voice and movement. This workshop strikes the perfect balance between joyful participation and meaningful learning. You will explore traditional Malagasy and Réunionese Creole songs and learn about the powerful oral traditions passed down through generations. Through call-and-response singing and body percussion, you'll experience the liberating and unifying spirit of Maloya. Vocal music (or simply "songs") has a universal ability to transcend division, language and background while communicating something meaningful beyond ourselves. This concert will feature three internationally acclaimed choirs: -Luminata Voices (New Zealand) -Veus – Amics de la Unió (Catalonia) -Sjaella (Germany) These three diverse choirs will present stunning a cappella works representative of their countries, ranging from the 15th to the 21st centuries. Each choir's repertoire will include songs from their homeland, presented through folk songs, featured composers, and interpretation. Unfolding with carefully crafted staging, music, and choreography will intertwine to enhance the expressiveness of each piece and captivate the audience. This is no ordinary concert… the audience won't just listen; they will experience the music as part of it.

Cooking and singing in Welsh! Dw i hoffi cacen! (I like cake!) Rydyn ni'n hoffi cacen! (We like cake!) Do you like cake? Then this is the perfect workshop for you! Join dynamic musicians Jenny M. Thomas and Dan Witton from Bush Gothic for a fun and interactive workshop where you'll learn to cook traditional picau ar y maen (Welsh cakes) and sing some curly Welsh phrases ar yr un pryd! (at the same time!) In this hands-on workshop, Jenny and Dan will introduce you to the Welsh language through simple, catchy lyrics, while you work alongside a cogydd (chef) to prepare and cook your very own Welsh cakes. No previous experience with Welsh language, food, or music is needed—just a love for good company and trying new things! As you bake, you'll learn Welsh phrases like: -"Dw i hoffi cacen!" (I like cake!) -"Cacennau Cymreig" (Welsh cakes) -"Canu'n harmoni" (Sing in harmony) -"Bore da!" Monique Brumby and David Bridie duet in celebration of nearly 30 years. Fool For You was Monique Brumby's debut single, released in 1996. Produced by the celebrated David Bridie (Not Drowning, Waving and My Friend the Chocolate Cake), it was nominated for three ARIA Music Awards and won Best New Talent—marking the beginning of a remarkable creative partnership. Nearly 30 years later, the pair reunite for Fool For You: Songs of Love & Heartbreak, a special performance featuring their iconic duets and stories behind the songs—celebrating love, heartbreak, and collaboration. With Tasman Peninsula Singers in Port Arthur Join us at The Asylum: Port Arthur Historic Site for a memorable evening of live choral music inside one of the site's most evocative spaces. Founded in 2008, Kompactus is a Canberra-based chamber choir of singers aged 18 to 30. Led by conductor and composer Olivia Swift, the ensemble is known for its expressive, genre-spanning performances—from early music to bold contemporary works. Their programs often explore striking contrasts and unexpected themes, with past repertoire including music about time, nature, and even the curious habits of chickens. With appearances at major events such as the Canberra International Music Festival and the National Folk Festival, Kompactus has built a strong reputation for musical excellence, adventurous programming and the warmth and clarity of their vocal blend. Local favourites, the Tasman Peninsula Singers, will join Kompactus, adding a homegrown touch to this special night. With fires burning outside, food and drinks available for purchase, and the resonant acoustics of The Asylum filling with song, this is a unique opportunity to experience the power of choral music in one of Tasmania's most atmospheric heritage buildings. Formed in 2019, the dynamic folk duo comprises Australian music darlings Sam Lohs (Fruit) and Rosie Burgess (Rosie Burgess Trio). Armed with sharp wit, infectious humour, and the ever-present ukulele, they turn everyday moments into comedic gold. David Lawrence conducts this magnificent masterwork Verdi's Requiem is one of the most dramatic and operatic compositions of its kind, renowned as one of the most enthralling settings of the Catholic funeral mass. Although a mass for the dead, its emotional impact and dramatic intensity rival any night at the opera. Often described as bleak and foreboding, the impact and sheer drama created by Verdi's Requiem stands out as one of the best-loved choral works in concert repertoire. Audiences across the globe are familiar with the Dies Irae, which often adds strength and atmosphere in contemporary film and other media. Premiered in 1874, Verdi's Requiem was last performed in Hobart in 1978. Join us to experience this compelling work conducted by UK's David Lawrence, featuring outstanding soloists Sharon Prero, Katharine Tier, Michael Petruccelli and Christopher Richardson, together with a mighty chorus of 200 voices including members of the TSO Chorus, and Festival of Voices' 20th Anniversary Orchestra comprising members from the Hobart Chamber Orchestra and Hobart Wind Symphony.
