The Secret World of Tasmanian Bats - Beaker Street Festival 2026

An image of Dr Lisa Cawthen holding a bat.
Discover the secret world of bats with chiropterologist Dr Lisa Cawthen. Lisa will introduce the world of chiropterology - the study of bats. She'll take you through the incredible diversity of bats around the globe, introduce the species that call Tasmania home, and then share with you how scientists eavesdrop on their hidden lives using bat detectors. You'll then have the opportunity to step outside to put your new chiropterology skills to the test and see if we can detect any of the bats that inhabit the foothills of Kunanyi / Mt Wellington. This is an all-weather activity and if we aren't able to go outside, we'll practice our new skills inside! This event is part of Beaker Street Festival 2026
