Fast and Loose Landscapes in Tasmania 2027

Tim Allen Artist
Join acclaimed Australian mixed-media landscape artist Tim Allen for an immersive painting retreat in the wild beauty of Tasmania. Working both outdoors and in the spacious studio, Tim will guide students through alla prima techniques in oil and acrylic, as well as layered mixed-media approaches. Participants can explore one or multiple methods, with a focus on mark making, observation, composition, and the creative thinking behind bold, expressive landscapes. Tim's teaching is enthusiastic, supportive, and highly individualised, helping artists of all experience levels develop their own creative direction. Demonstrations encourage personal interpretation rather than imitation. The retreat is based in remote northeast Tasmania, in a tiny farming community centred around a beautifully restored 100-year-old hotel that serves as Artable's Australian retreat base. Surrounded by rolling hills and untouched countryside, the location offers access to extraordinary landscapes, including the vibrant coastline of Bay of Fires, crystal-clear rivers, deep valleys, and remote painting sites rarely seen by visitors. Curated by Artable founder Gillian, the retreat includes private rooms at no extra cost, a light-filled studio, a welcoming lounge with fireplace, daily excursions, and outstanding local Tasmanian food. Designed for artists eager to explore mark making and landscape painting, this retreat offers creative inspiration in one of Australia's most powerful natural settings.
