Trousers Point Picnic Area
Trousers Point - is the most popular beach on Flinders Island. It's the one place you can be guaranteed to find a free gas bbq that is sheltered from the notorious roaring forties. Trousers Point is a good swimming beach and a place of such breath-taking loveliness as to bring sudden tears to the eyes. Of all Island beauty spots, the views from Trousers Point must be the most photographed.
The Trousers Point Reserve (some 100 hectares) is part of the Strzelecki National Park and under the control of the Parks and Wildlife Service. So you will need to purchase a Parks Pass from Service Tasmania or either of the car rental companies before you visit.
There are public toilets, picnic tables, dressing sheds, wood barbecue fireplaces, a water supply and a sheltered area for camping.
The name? It is said to commemorate the lucky escape of a certain Richard Burgess, without his trousers, from the wreck nearby of the Sarah Ann Blanche. Another (less dramatic!) story ascribes the name to discovery on the beach of a box of trousers washed up from the wreck of the Cambridgeshire in 1875.
