One of Tasmania’s most popular destinations – Freycinet National Park and its picture-perfect Wineglass Bay - lie within the orbit of this relaxed seaside town.

Yet Coles Bay has beauty all of its own, sitting beneath the pink-granite peaks of the Hazards range and overlooking serene Great Oyster Bay.

From the water, sailing, eco-cruising and kayaking offer remarkable views of otherwise hard-to-access beaches and the Hazards. Or take to the skies on a scenic flight for more elevated views.

From land, there are well-maintained walking trails for all levels of interest and fitness, from 10min beach walks to multi-day hikes around the peninsula.

The area is a haven for wildlife, with good chances of spying pademelons, echidnas, wombats, white-bellied sea eagles and wallabies. For the botanically inclined, native orchids are most prolific in October and November.

Coles Bay caters to all budgets and tastes, ranging from luxury accommodation and gourmet dining to caravan and camping facilities. Camping in Freycinet National Park is so popular during the summer holidays that ballots are drawn for sites in early August – see more details.
