The town hosts the Tasmanian Trout Expo each year, and the prize catch (and release) of the day is a $10,000 tagged trout.
Sitting below the mountain bluffs of the Great Western Tiers, which form part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Site, the town is also at the heart of a rich rural region – this was once Tasmania’s most productive wheat-growing area.
Pouring through the bluffs, a 30min drive from Cressy, is one of northern Tasmania's most beautiful waterfalls, Liffey Falls.
