Woolmers Estate
Woolmers Estate is one of just 11 Australian Convict Sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, telling the convict story you haven't heard. While sites like Port Arthur tell the story of punishment, Woolmers reveals the Assignment System, where convicts were sent to private properties, learned trades, earned their freedom and often chose to stay. A story of skill, resilience and second chances, told through 18 original buildings still standing across 13 hectares. Your ticket includes access to both Brickendon Estate and Woolmers Estate, two UNESCO World Heritage Sites sitting 2.8 kilometres apart, connected by the Convict Farm Walk along the Macquarie River, the same ground assigned convicts walked between the two estates. At Brickendon, established in 1824 and still farmed by seventh-generation Archer descendants, more than 20 convict-built buildings make up an intact 1820s Farm Village, with daily animal feeding on a working 465-hectare property. Also included is Unshackled, Australia's premier convict exhibition, an award-winning digital experience revealing the true story of 160,000 transported convicts through augmented reality, video documentaries and immersive installations. Guided house tours run daily at 10:30am and 1pm. Open daily from 8am. Tasmanian residents receive free entry when accompanying interstate or international guests. Every visit helps preserve 200 years of Australian history.
