Day 1: Around the island
Head north from Currie, making the King Island Dairy cheese store your first stop to gather a selection of cheeses for your island stay.
Notice the bull kelp lining the shoreline? Call into King Island Kelp Craft in the Reekara Community Complex to find a range of souvenirs cut from kelp.
Make tracks for the beach at Martha Lavinia, whether it be with board or boots in hand. Hit the waves or stroll the sands, and check out Pennys Lagoon, a rare perched lake, pooled atop sand at a higher level than other lakes around it.
Spend an afternoon amid golfing greatness with a round at the Cape Wickham links course, rated by Golf Australia magazine as Australia’s second-best golf course.
Head to Grassy for dinner devoted to island produce at Wild Harvest.
Before leaving Grassy, duck down to the town breakwater on dusk to watch little penguins waddling ashore.
Day 2: Currie to Naracoopa return
Stretch your legs with a morning walk to the limestone marvel of the Calcified Forest.
Continue to the end of Seal Rocks Road and take in the view over the 60m-high cliffs and the fierce Southern Ocean.
Pause for lunch at Cafe Brewer, serving homestyle food and all-day breakfasts that can be eaten out under the eucalypts.
Pick up a Maritime Trail brochure and set off to discover the shipwrecks strewn around the entire coastline.
Drop into the taproom at King Island Brewhouse before venturing on to Naracoopa, a quiet settlement noted for its beautiful beach.
Dine at tiny Oleada, or seek a sunset view over dinner at View Dining.
Day 3: Around Currie
Tee up again, this time at Ocean Dunes Golf Course. Even if you’ve played a bad round, the dramatic coastal scenery is unforgettable.
Wander the shores of Currie Harbour. Take a tour of the cast-iron, 21m-high lighthouse, visit the historical museum, and discover local art at the King Island Cultural Centre.
Gather dinner supplies at one of Currie’s supermarkets and take a seat for a leisurely meal with a difference at the Restaurant With No Food.
