Isolated Maydena has a rich forestry heritage, but is better known now for its challenging mountain-bike park.
A short walk outside of town leads to the entrance of Junee Cave, an underground system that harbours 395m-deep Niggly Cave, Australia’s deepest cave.
Maydena is an 80min drive (85km) west of Hobart.
- Crane your neck in the Styx Tall Trees Conservation Area, where Eucalyptus regnans, the mighty mountain ash, grow to more than 90m in height, making them among the world’s tallest trees.
- Russell Falls are just one of Mount Field National Park’s spectacular waterfalls. Walk the 6km Three Falls Circuit to also take in Horseshoe Falls and Lady Barron Falls.
