Get ready for fresh ocean fare, bold wine and epic scenery on the east coast of Tasmania. Your 3-day itinerary starts here.
The must-do activities
- Feast on the finest al fresco fare under twinkling skies at Twamley Farm.
- Sip whisky then sweat it out again with a winter dip and sauna at Waubs Bay.
- Lap up hot chocolate and winter weather in Tasmania’s lush Coal River Valley winery region.
Day 1: Hobart to Buckland
Warm up with breakfast at Harbour Lights Cafe in the Hobart CBD. Dine in or mosey along the waterfront while you eat.
Drive 15min north-east to Sullivans Cove Distillery in Cambridge and sink into a soft lounge chair with a World Whiskies Award-winning glass of liquid gold.
From here, it's only a 5min drive north-east to Tunnel Hill Mushrooms, burrowed into the hillside at Mount Rumney. Resident mushroom afficionado Dean Smith offers guided farm and fungi tours through this damp, historical railway tunnel – the secret to his thriving crop. Forward bookings are a must.
Cruise 1hr north-east and pull over at Old Convict Road in Orford to walk off those mushies. The 1841–1855-built trail is a flat, accessible 1km stroll.
Make your way 20min south-west to Twamley Farm in the historical town of Buckland for a romantic winter dinner. Ask ahead for pre-prepared gourmet dinner. From hearty soups to crunchy bread, eat up and wash it down with a bottle of Tasmania’s finest. If you’re extending your stay here to two nights, take advantage of Twamley’s Off Season offer: a picnic under the stars with locally sourced pheasant and the ultimate comfort drink: hot chocolate and toasted marshmallows.
Then it’s a soothing soak in your hot tub under star-filled skies until lights out. Sleep serenely inside Twamley Farm’s renovated 1840s stable.
Day 2: Buckland to Bicheno
Rise and shine: enjoy breakfast among birdsong and English oak trees at Twamley Farm before hitting the road.
Drive 85min north to Devil’s Corner Cellar Door. Enjoy a leisurely lunch of pizza or seafood and try the DIY ‘taste at your own pace’ session, or dip into the vineyard's exclusive Off Season experience: a wine tasting and oyster-shucking session at Moulting Lagoon, followed by a seasonal lunch in the underground Devil’s Den, topped off with toasted s’mores for good measure.
Next, drive north-east for 20min to salty beach town Bicheno. Inhale sea air and watch waves crash ashore on a stroll along the orange-boulder coastline to Bicheno Blowhole: a spurting saltwater marvel. Winter’s swell makes for an even more dramatic (and cold) spray. Stand as close as you dare. Then head inside Undersong Perfumery (open Wednesday–Saturday) to immerse yourself in native artisan scents.
Then it’s a short stroll next door to Waubs Harbour Distillery for a dram (open Monday–Saturday). Visiting on a Saturday afternoon? Book ahead for Waubs’ winter whisky and seaside stories experience and be regaled by historic maritime tales while you sip spirits imbued with ocean brine.
Walk just around the corner for dinner at Lobster Shack – their hearty lobster chowder is a winter crowd pleaser. Ready your tastebuds for their famous lobster rolls, freshly shucked oysters with lemon and damn good fish and chips.
End with a 4min drive down the road to Cooinda on the Beachfront – your secluded stay for the night. In the Off Season, you can add the on-site sauna experience to your stay for free, swapping between icy swims and satisfying sweats at Waubs Bay. You’ll sleep like a Nordic baby.
Day 3: Bicheno to Hobart
Take a morning plunge into Waubs Bay (outside voices allowed), then warm up with one last sauna at Cooinda.
Drive an easy 1min to Governors Bicheno cafe for a cuppa and hearty breakfast, then explore Bicheno's local boutiques and seaside sights by foot.
Drive 45min south-west to Swansea and hop onto a two-wheeler with Swansea Cycle Tours and Bike Hire – the ultimate way to experience this seaside village at your own pace. Book ahead.
Next stop: Coal River Valley’s Federation Artisan Chocolate, a 90min drive south-west of Swansea. Pour your own Tasmania-shaped chocolate and zhuzh it up with embellishments of your choosing, then warm up with specialty spiced hot chocolate. It’s the hardest decision you’ll have to make all day: will you choose cosy chilli, or soothing cinnamon?
Drive a further 15min south-west to find yourself back on Hobart’s waterfront, ready to dive into tantalising seafood dishes at Hobart institution: Mures Upper Deck. Gaze out to sea as city lights dance on the water.
Third generation Mures fisher Jock Mure hosts a southern bluefin tuna carving ceremony on select dates during the Off Season, carving a whole fish before your eyes and whipping up a four-course degustation dinner paired with local wines. Time your Mures Upper Deck visit to coincide with a ceremony and book ahead, or book any day of the week to savour the restaurant’s premium ocean menu.
One thing’s for certain, winter in Tasmania keeps you well fed and entertained.
