Learn to love winter as a Calf Concierge

Your Winternship

In Tasmania, winter isn’t endured – it’s embraced. At Borradale Stanley, that means waking up before dawn, pulling on gumboots and stepping into a paddock where the newest members of the farm are finding their feet.

You'll need 20/20 vision to stand by on farm maternity watch. Somewhere in the paddock, a calf may be about to make its grand entrance, and it'll be your duty to flag down the farmer. If you're lucky, you'll be asked to lend a hand to catch a wide-eyed winter enthusiast as it becomes the newest Tasmanian to join farm life.

Then, it’s time to help out the smallest residents of the farm and give our lambs extra care (and cuddles). You’ll be bottle-feeding them, keeping them warm and helping them find their footing — one tiny hoof at a time.

As the sun goes down, you’ll receive a well-deserved whisky and time to defrost in the tub before unwinding in one of the snug Borradale bedrooms. Sleep soundly until your mooing and bleating alarm clock reminds you that winter mornings in Tasmania are brisk, beautiful and worth skipping the 'snooze' button for.

The finer details

  • Start the day on paddock patrol – moving fences and feeding hungry cows.
  • Stay on high alert for calving time, then – if you are lucky enough – jump into action to help welcome the newest winter-lovers to the shed.
  • Bottle-feed orphaned lambs, help them walk on wobbly legs and make sure they stay warm.
  • An early riser who won’t flinch at the thought of a frosty morning.
  • Calm and capable in the thick of things – whether it's a newborn calf or a lamb on the loose.
  • Happy to trade polished shoes for mud-caked boots and the city for the sound of hooves.
  • One jam-packed day of volunteer experience on a working winter farm at Borradale Stanley.
  • Return flights to Tasmania.
  • Car hire.
  • Two nights’ accommodation, including a cosy night’s stay on the farm, complete with warm meals and a whisky wind-down.
  • A selection of Tasmanian treats.

You will leave with a new appreciation for mud and straw, after your ultimate ‘soft launch’ into farm life is complete.
