Learn to love winter as a Sauna Skipper

Your Winternship

When temperatures dip, so do Tasmanians. As the Sauna Skipper Wintern, you'll be responsible for making sure Kuuma Nature Sauna, Australia’s first sauna boat experience, is toasty enough to make dunking into the icy southern waters worth it. One minute, you're human gazpacho. The next, you're a sizzling slow roast.

Arrive pre-sunrise to Margate Marina and learn how to start the fire on the wood-burning sauna. Once you’ve learned the ropes, help the captain cruise the ‘steam’ boat across the bay and pick the position with the best sauna views (every spot is a good spot to drop anchor, so you can't go wrong).

When your duties are done, lean into a lesson in winter mornings and send the nearby wildlife scampering with a squeal-inducing dunk into the brisk waters. You'll acquire the Tassie taste for a chilly dip in no time – it's a better buzz than your morning brew.

It might look a little different to the snug winter lie-in you’re used to but, in Tasmania, mornings this breathtaking aren’t to be wasted.

The finer details

  • Get the wood-fired sauna roaring – because nothing says 'winter bliss' like a crackling fire and steamy vibes.
  • Infuse the air with essential oils that smell like a Scandinavian daydream.
  • Assist the captain in scouting the dreamiest views and anchoring the floating sauna in the perfect spot. Think hot steam meets epic scenery.
  • As the instigator of zen, you'll keep things spotless and serene – fully stocked woodpile, no rogue socks and zero chaos (aside from a few mid-swim shrieks). You’re the guardian of the good vibes.
  • Must be a morning person, or able to ignore the snooze button.
  • Comfortable working on the water and able to swim (doggy paddle will do).
  • Ready to identify and steer the sauna to the best views.
  • No hesitation, just cold-water glory.
  • An embracer of balance: hard work followed by a steamy sauna.
  • A morning on board Kuuma Nature Sauna, learning how the locals embrace their Tasmanian winter morning routines.
  • Return flights to Tasmania from your nearest capital city.
  • Car hire.
  • Two nights' accommodation.
  • A selection of Tasmanian treats.

You will leave with a new perspective on the benefits of switching your cappuccino for a chilly morning dip.
