If Alone Australia has you craving a taste of adventure, visit Tasmania’s dramatic west coast in winter to channel your inner survivalist, connect with nature and seek solitude.

The must-do activities

  • Get a taste of Tasmanian wilderness on the island’s Great Short Walks: Franklin Nature Trail and Nelson Falls.
  • Take in views of Alone Australia Season 3 landscapes from the West Coast Range.
  • Feel tiny amongst towering Henty Dunes and the vast expanse of Ocean Beach.

Day 1: Hobart to Queenstown

5 Stops
257km

Pack your bags (yes, you can bring more than 10 items) and fortify yourself for a winter adventure with breakfast at North Hobart’s Abercrombie Coffee – try the frozen coffee menu.

Leave Hobart behind and venture into the highlands. Urban streetscapes give way to fields, ancient forests, alpine plains, rugged mountain peaks and wild rivers.

Stop for lunch at Derwent Bridge Wilderness Hotel before continuing along the Lyell Highway.

Embrace the chill, fresh air and raw beauty of nature on Franklin Nature Trail and Nelson Falls short walks – a more gentle introduction to Tasmania’s World Heritage wilderness than your average Alone Australia participant gets.

Stop by Queenstown's gravel football oval, home to gritty contests of a different kind.

Finally, settle into a stay at the historic Empire Hotel. No need to give up creature comforts. Let someone else light the fire while you warm up with mulled wine and dinner at the hotel’s restaurant.

Day 2: Explore around Queenstown

7 Stops
22km

Take advantage of the Empire Hotel's two-night Off Season offer – continental breakfast is included with your stay.

The offer also includes a discounted ride on the West Coast Wilderness Railway. Hop aboard the steam train for a journey deep into the remote west-coast rainforest.

Return to Queenstown for lunch at Tracks Cafe to refuel.

Next, drive to Lake Burbury to witness the craggy peaks of the West Coast Range, where Season 3 was filmed.

Get a taste of the immense landscapes with your own Alone moment on a Mount Owen 4x4 adventure with RoamWild.

Book a table at Smelters Restaurant to dine by the fire with views of Mount Owen. If you’re tired, takeaways are also available.

Rest your weary head back at your hotel for a second night.

Day 3: Queenstown to Strahan

4 Stops
81km

Rise early for breakfast at your accommodation and continue west to explore the waterways and wild coastline around Strahan.

Enjoy a window seat for views of west-coast winter wilderness on a morning heritage cruise along the serene Gordon River with World Heritage Cruises. You’ll also encounter stories of isolation and survival at Sarah Island on this tour. Lunch included.

Then, head north to Henty Dunes to (temporarily) lose yourself in the towering sand dunes that climb up to 30m high.

The dunes overlook Ocean Beach. Feel tiny and contemplate the might of the Southern Ocean amidst the vast expanse of Tasmania’s longest beach.

Try warming winter produce at waterfront Hamer’s Bar and Bistro before sleeping in very un-Alone like comfort, surrounded by nature at Strahan Wilderness Lodge.

Day 4: Strahan to Launceston

7 Stops
285km

Check out of your wilderness lodge, swing by the Coffee Shack for a bite, before slowly wending your way back to the city.

Not ready to tap out yet? Follow the Hogarth Falls short walk (2.4km, 45min return) from Strahan’s centre through tall trees and rainforest to the rushing waterfall.

Next, stop at Zeehan to visit the nearby Spray Tunnel, where darkness envelops you and glow worms glitter like a starry night sky.

Bid farewell to the west coast and drive east to Deloraine. Spare a thought for the Alone Australia participants eating slimy eels (or not eating at all) as you tuck into small batch brews and artisan pizza at historic Bush Inn Brewhouse.

Arrive in Launceston to complete your journey with a celebratory feast at Grain of the Silos. Finally, retreat upstairs to relax in your Peppers Silo Hotel deluxe room.
